Flashnet and Kerlink powering smart cities with LoRaWAN
Cities are exploring smarter, more sustainable ways to manage core infrastructure and services. As one of the most impactful and visible smart city upgrades, smart street lighting contributes directly to this approach by modernizing urban infrastructure with minimal disruption and delivering measurable results from day one: 40% energy savings through dimming and smart scheduling, and up to 42% maintenance cost reduction through in-depth, real-time awareness and predictive maintenance.

In addition, it reduces environmental impact, supports long-term sustainability goals, enhances public safety, and enables significant savings in municipal budgets, making the implementation of smart street lighting highly attractive to municipalities all around the world.
When cities and infrastructure projects demand scalable smart lighting, performance hinges on more than just intelligent lamp controllers. It requires a communication network and a city-wide management platform built for interoperability, flexibility and long-term growth.
This is where the collaboration between Flashnet, a global provider of smart street lighting solutions, and Kerlink, a leader in LoRaWAN® network infrastructure, has made a measurable impact. Together, the two companies have helped cities like Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and large-scale infrastructure projects like the A1 Highway in Greece turn their public lighting grids into intelligent, future-ready platforms – without disruptive civil works or excessive costs.
Why LoRaWAN for Smart Street Lighting?
LoRaWAN® (Long Range Wide Area Network) technology is uniquely suited for smart lighting applications. It offers:
- Long-range, low-power connectivity
- Cost-effective private or public network options
- Resilience in challenging geographies and remote areas
- Future-proof layers of end-to-end security for network and application
When paired with smart controllers and Flashnet’s integrated IoT communication platform, LoRaWAN enables real-time monitoring, remote diagnostics and scalable deployments – all while reducing operational costs and improving energy efficiency.
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – A Smart Lighting Milestone
The project was initiated to address the growing need for energy-efficient public lighting and improved resilience in a city facing high ambient temperatures and power fluctuations. In partnership with Saudi Delta Group, Flashnet deployed 5,700 smart streetlight controllers (NEMA and FRCM segment controllers) across Jeddah, leveraging Kerlink’s LoRaWAN® Wirnet iStation (868) base stations for robust wireless communication. To ensure continuous operation of the street lighting control infrastructure and maintain reliable lighting across the city around the clock, solar-powered UPS systems were integrated to provide backup for the LoRaWAN® network.
Key Highlights:
- Hybrid control (individual + segment) optimized both coverage and cost.
- Solar-powered UPS systems ensured uninterrupted network operation during outages.
- Kerlink LoRaWAN® infrastructure enabled broad area coverage with minimal interference.
- Remote monitoring reduced maintenance time and costs while improving safety and efficiency.
This deployment set a benchmark in the region, showing how modern street lighting can evolve without replacing poles or disrupting city operations.
Greece’s A1 Highway – Smart Lighting Over 300km
Highway lighting presents its own challenges: low fixture density, limited communication coverage, and long distances. Working with lighting manufacturer Sirecled, Flashnet embedded 4,395 LoRaWAN®-compatible controllers into new luminaires. With support from 30 Kerlink Wirnet iStation gateways, they created a private LoRaWAN® network covering over 300 km.
Project Highlights:
- Low-density, high-range deployment with fewer than 30 gateways.
- Controllers embedded from factory, simplifying rollout and speeding installation.
- Integrated with existing management software via Flashnet’s open APIs.
- Estimated 55% energy savings, with annual savings over €850,000.
- Return on investment under 5 years.
With LoRaWAN® as the backbone, Greece’s A1 Highway project demonstrates that even the most demanding linear infrastructure can become intelligent, efficient and future-ready.
“At Kerlink, we deliver high-performance LoRaWAN gateways that provide reliable, secure, and scalable connectivity across a wide range of IoT use cases – including smart city applications such as our collaboration with Flashnet. These projects demonstrate how combining robust infrastructure with intelligent lighting solutions can accelerate deployment, optimize coverage, and deliver long-term operational and environmental benefits.” says Yann Bauduin, Chief Sales Officer, Kerlink.
“LoRaWAN® is more than a connectivity layer, it’s the backbone that enables scalable, cost-effective smart city infrastructure – whether it’s an urban center like Jeddah or a 300km stretch of highway. Combined with our inteliLIGHT® and inteliCITY® platforms and supported by Kerlink’s reliable network infrastructure, it becomes the perfect enabler for smarter, more responsive cities.” says Alexandru Buzatu, Chief Commercial Officer, Flashnet
